I saw daffodils blooming today. It surprised and delighted me. In New Orleans daffodils are scarce. Maybe they aren't cut out to survive the so-fast changes from cool to hot in my adopted hometown.
But I'm back in Atlanta today. Actually, I'm about forty miles north of the city in a neighborhood that rubs shoulders with the North Georgia mountains. I finished the 500+ mile trip from New Orleans last night in the dead, cold dark and didn't notice the daffodils until this morning.
They are a bright yellow reminder of geography. Even though I've come to think of my world as close and interconnected, 500 miles is a long way. I left the people back in New Orleans in a different time zone. If I waited until midnight to phone someone in New Orleans, we could talk to each other at the same time on different days! That delights me almost as much as the daffodils. Philosphers and scientists have pondered the phenomena of time, space, and distance for thousands of years. I got to it a little late, but I'm here.
