The Camera Never Lies -- I Guess...

Since I've gotten the Facebook bug, I've been pulling together pictures to post in albums on my profile page. I'm finding it really is a good way to share pictures with my friends. The problem arises with the pictures of me.

If you know Facebook, you know that a "profile" picture is a nice thing to load onto your page. It gives friends a chance to get to see you as you are today. (The "Facebook" idea as I understand it comes from Harvard 's printed Facebook distributed to incoming freshman. That Facebook is exactly that -- a reference book of headshots. It's supposed to help the newbies know who's who.)

I can't get a picture of me I like. None of my current ones look like me. Or who I think is me. If I take a digital picture right this minute it just won't pop up the real me on the little screen. We've all had the experience of hearing our recorded speaking voice and saying, "Do I really sound like that?!" Now, I'm having the same reactions to the visual record.

The woman I see in the mirror everyday is getting older, granted, but still has life and energy. The digital representation seems to exaggerate every wrinkle -- every sag -- every spot. The woman in the pictures is OLD! Obviously, the technology has not caught up with me.
